Celebrating Pride Month on Social Media
June is Pride Month, where we celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community, and honour and acknowledge the fight that many people made to obtain the rights we have today.
It’s an important time to show your support for diverse and inclusive communities online, and to advocate for more equality.
Many businesses want to do something during this month, but there are a lot of common pitfalls we see. That’s why we have some advice on how you can make sure that you are running a successful social campaign that doesn’t ring hollow.
Thinking about doing something to show your support for the LGBT+ community this year? Here are some good things to keep in mind when planning your social media campaign.
Show Your Support All Year Round
While June is a great chance to really amp up your support, it shouldn’t be the only time of year where you advocate for the LGBT+ community.
Campaigning for more diverse and inclusive representation in your workplace year round is just one of the ways you can be a good ally.
Including things such as your pronouns in your email signatures is a subtle yet powerful way to show your support.
Cultivating a safe space in your office for people to be who they truly are isn’t something that just stops once you’ve finished your pride campaign.
If you only care about these issues when June rolls around, then it is going to come across as being a hollow money grab, which is not going to be good for your brand.
Educate Yourself & Your Staff
One of the best things you can do is educate yourself and your staff. Often people don’t mean to be insensitive, but due to ignorance they may not even realise what they are saying is wrong.
Making an active effort to educate yourself on these issues is a great way to show your support to the lgbtq community. This way you can start to really understand why pride is important beyond your marketing efforts.
You should educate yourself specifically about the community in the area where you live and work, so you can understand the unique history and culture that you share together.
Collaborate With LGBTQ Groups
Collaborating with LGBTQ groups is a great way to help amplify diverse voices. You can get input and feedback directly from people who are actually impacted by these topics.
Internationally there is a plethora of really good resources and groups working to make the world a better place. Find one near where you live, and collaborate with them for your pride campaign.
This way you can use your social media platforms to raise awareness about current issues, and help make a difference today.
A lot of pride campaigns focus on the history of pride month, which is really amazing. However they fall down because they don’t continue to talk about how we can build towards change in the modern world.
Make a Donation
Putting your money where your mouth is can be a really powerful statement to make for pride month.
There are a lot of great charities out there, and supporting them with a donation can show that you actually care about what you are saying online.
You may want to choose a local charity, or a cause that is close to your heart. Whatever it may be, it’s good to research them and make sure that you understand where the funds raised go.
Celebrating Pride Month on your social media channels is a great way to get involved with the community, but remember, it doesn’t just stop in June.
Love is love.
